I recently Post-migrated my website to a New domain. Due to change a site lost 60% of its organic traffice with in a month. How can I recover it?
Traffic loss after a domain migration is common, but it can usually be recovered by following a structured process.
1. Verify 301 Redirects
Ensure that every old URL permanently redirects (301) to its corresponding new URL. Missing or incorrect redirects are one of the biggest reasons for traffic loss.
2. Check Google Search Console
Add and verify the new domain in Google Search Console. Use the Change of Address tool if the migration involved a complete domain change. Monitor indexing, coverage, and crawl errors regularly.
3. Update XML Sitemap
Generate a fresh XML sitemap for the new domain and submit it to Google Search Console. This helps Google discover and index the new URLs faster.
4. Fix Crawl Errors
Review 404 pages, redirect chains, broken links, and server errors. Resolve any issues that prevent search engines from accessing your content.
5. Compare Old and New URLs
Use crawling tools such as Screaming Frog to compare both websites and ensure that important pages, metadata, canonical tags, and structured data were migrated correctly.
6. Review Robots.txt and Noindex Tags
Check that important pages are not blocked by robots.txt and do not contain accidental noindex tags.
7. Update Internal Links
Replace links pointing to the old domain with the new domain throughout the website to improve crawl efficiency and user experience.
8. Reclaim Important Backlinks
Identify high-authority backlinks that still point to the old domain and request updates where possible. Although 301 redirects pass authority, direct links are preferable.
9. Monitor Rankings and Traffic
Track keyword rankings, organic traffic, and indexed pages weekly. Some fluctuations are normal for several weeks after migration.
10. Be Patient
Google often needs time to process a domain migration. Depending on the website size and authority, recovery can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months.
My migration recovery checklist is simple:
- Verify 301 redirects
- Check Search Console errors
- Submit updated sitemap
- Fix indexing issues
- Update internal links
- Reclaim backlinks
- Monitor rankings and traffic
If the migration was implemented correctly, most websites recover their traffic and rankings over time, and many eventually outperform their previous domain.
