Keyword cannibalization happens when Google gets confused. Because you have multiple pages talking about the exact same topic, Google doesn’t know which one is the “hero” page. Instead of ranking one page incredibly high, it splits your rankings, traffic, and authority across three or four pages, trapping them all on Page 2 or 3.

Fixing this requires a “Merge, Direct, and Differentiate” strategy. The goal is to combine the SEO power of those competing pages into one powerhouse page without dropping the traffic the individual pages are currently bringing in.

Here is the step-by-step process to fix it safely.

Step 1: Map the Competitors

Before changing anything, you need to see exactly which pages are fighting each other.

Go to Google Search Console (GSC), click on Performance, and filter by the specific keyword that is fluctuating. Scroll down and click on the Pages tab.

If you see 2, 3, or more URLs showing up with a high number of impressions but low clicks, you have found your cannibalization culprits.

Step 2: Choose the “Hero” Page

You cannot keep all these pages targeting the exact same keyword. You must pick one winner to be your Pillar Page. To choose the right one, look at your data and pick the page that has:

  • The highest number of existing backlinks (highest authority).

  • The best conversion rate or user engagement.

  • The most evergreen, comprehensive URL structure (e.g., /seo-strategy is better than /seo-strategy-2026).

Step 3: Executing the Fix (The 3 Best Methods)

Depending on what those competing pages actually look like, you will use one of three methods to clean up the mess.

Method A: The Merge & Redirect (Best for traffic retention)

If Page B and Page C are just weaker, older, or shorter versions of your Hero Page (Page A), you should blend them together.

  • The Action: Take any unique insights, data points, or headers from Pages B and C and add them to Page A to make it a massive, ultimate guide.

  • The Technical Fix: Delete Pages B and C, and set up a 301 Redirect from those old URLs pointing directly to Page A.

  • Why it works: A 301 redirect tells Google, “Hey, we moved this content permanently. Please pass all the rankings and link authority from the old pages over to this new one.” You won’t lose traffic because users clicking the old links are instantly sent to the superior, updated page.

Method B: De-optimize and Pivot (Best when you want to keep all pages)

Sometimes you want to keep the competing pages because they serve a purpose. For example, maybe one is a “Beginner’s Guide” and the other is an “Advanced Guide,” but they are both accidentally ranking for the general keyword.

  • The Action: Edit the weaker pages to change their focus. Rewrite their titles, H1 tags, and introductory text to target a different, more specific “long-tail” keyword.

  • Example: If both are fighting for “SEO Strategy,” keep the Hero page targeting “SEO Strategy”, but change the other page to target “SEO Strategy for E-commerce Websites.”

  • The Link Fix: Inside the body text of the secondary page, add a clear internal link pointing back to your Hero Page using the exact anchor text you want the Hero page to rank for.

Method C: Canonicalization (The “Look over there” tag)

Use this if you have two pages that must exist exactly as they are (for example, two highly similar product variations or location pages), and you cannot change the text.

  • The Technical Fix: Add a rel=”canonical” tag to the HTML code of the secondary page, pointing to the Hero page.

  • Why it works: This tag explicitly tells Googlebot, “We know this page looks identical to our Hero page. Please ignore this one for ranking purposes, and give all the search credit to the Hero page instead.” The secondary page stays live for your users to see, but it stops competing in Google search results.

Step 4: The Post-Fix Checklist

Once you have implemented your fixes, you need to send a clear signal to Google to recalculate your rankings:

Task What to Do Why it Matters
Update Internal Links Search your own website for any old links that used to point to the deleted/redirected pages. Change them to point directly to the new Hero page. Eliminates redirect chains and keeps your site architecture clean for Google’s crawlers.
Update your Sitemap Ensure the deleted or canonicalized URLs are removed from your XML sitemap, and only the Hero page remains. Speeds up the time it takes for Google to recognize your changes.
Fetch in GSC Paste your Hero Page URL into the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console and click “Request Indexing.” Forces Google to crawl the updated page immediately rather than waiting weeks for a natural crawl.

By consolidating three weak signals into one massive, authoritative signal, Google will finally understand which page deserves to be on Page 1.
